On December 28, 2011, Shireetta put her children to bed, just like any other night.
-
Unbeknownst to Shireetta, a defective curling iron was plugged into a defective power strip underneath one of her daughters’ beds.
-
In the middle of the night, a blanket fell from the bed onto the curling iron underneath, eventually igniting and causing a huge fire.
-
The fire claimed the entire house, as well as the life of Shireetta’s seven-year-old daughter.
-
The curling iron was not fitted with an automatic shut-off and was plugged into a power-strip fitted with a faulty surge protector. Had either one of these items been manufactured with standard consumer protections, the fire could have been prevented and a young life saved.
Messa & Associates secured a significant settlement from the manufacturers of both defective products, allowing Shireetta to provide a new home and life for her grieving family.
